Shopify product videos: specs and how to make them

Shopify product video specs

Shopify takes product videos of up to 10 minutes and 1 GB, uploaded as .mp4, .mov or .webm files at up to 4K. The full list is on two Help Center pages, product media types and adding media to products. Neither page shows an update date; we checked both on 25 September 2026.

Videos and 3D models per store250 on Starter, Basic, Retail and Pause and Build; 1,000 on Grow; 5,000 on Advanced; 50,000 on Plus; 100,000 on Enterprise

For a short product clip, the length and size ceilings hardly matter. Two other rows do. Playback steps between 480p, 720p and 1080p to suit each shopper's connection and your source file, so upload at least 1080p if you want shoppers on fast connections to get the sharp version. And the 250-item limit per product counts photos, videos and 3D models together, so a long photo gallery leaves less room for video.

The adding media page also has a troubleshooting section on a weekly video upload limit. We couldn't confirm the figure, so check that page before you upload videos for many products at once.

How the video shows up on your product page

A product video joins the product's media, the same list as its photos and 3D models, and shoppers watch a stream Shopify prepares from your upload rather than the file itself. The Help Center pages we checked don't say where the video sits in the gallery or whether it plays on its own, so check the live page instead of assuming. After you upload, look at four things:

  • Position. Decide whether the video should lead the gallery or follow your best photo, then check where it actually lands.
  • Sound off. Watch it muted. If the message depends on the voice-over, add burned-in captions.
  • The first seconds. Show the product and what it does right away, before a shopper moves on to the next image.
  • Phone and desktop. A tall 9:16 video can look cramped in a wide desktop gallery. If yours does, a square cut may suit the product page better, with the 9:16 version kept for ads.

Reuse it for Facebook and Instagram Reels ads

One export can do both jobs. A 9:16 MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio meets Meta's specs for full-screen Reels ads on Instagram and Facebook and stays inside Shopify's limits, so the video on your product page can also run as the Facebook and Instagram video ads for your Shopify store (Meta Ads Guide: Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels).

So export one file: 9:16 at 1080×1920, an MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio at 128 kbps or more, under Shopify's caps of 10 minutes and 1 GB. Meta recommends 1440×2560, the same shape at a higher resolution, and 1,080 pixels is far above Instagram's minimum width. Shopify gives its maximum as 4096×2160, a landscape size; a 1080×1920 file fits inside it whichever way you read it.

Reusing a product-page video as a Reels ad has one catch: the safe zone. Meta asks you to keep text, logos and other key elements out of the top 14%, the bottom 35% and 6% on each side of the frame (Meta Ads Guide). On a 1080×1920 video that leaves a box about 950 pixels wide, running from 269 to 1,248 pixels down from the top edge. A price or logo in the lower third of your product-page cut needs moving before it runs as a Reels ad.

How to make a product video from your product page

You don't need a studio. The photos and copy already on your product page are enough for a short vertical video, whether you edit it yourself or have an AI tool build it from the link. By hand, it takes six steps:

  1. Step 1

    Pick one message

Take the main benefit from your product description and show it in the first seconds. One clear point beats a feature list.

  2. Step 2

    Gather the shots

Your product photos, plus phone clips if you can shoot them: the product turning, in use, and next to something that shows its size.

  3. Step 3

    Write it short

A voice-over or on-screen text built from claims your page already makes. If the page can't back a claim up, leave it out.

  4. Step 4

Add captions, music and an end card

Captions carry the message when the video plays muted; the end card names the product and tells shoppers what to do next.

  5. Step 5

    Export once

A 9:16 MP4 at 1080×1920 with H.264 video and AAC audio: one file for the product page and your Reels ads.

  6. Step 6

    Upload and check

Add it to the product's media (Shopify's steps), then check the page on a phone and the ad in the Ads Manager preview for Reels.

From the product URL with ProductToReel

ProductToReel, which we make, does steps 1–5 from the link; you upload and check. Paste your Shopify product URL: it reads the product's name, description, price and photos, and in about 20 seconds writes three storyboards (hook, voice-over and shot plan), free and without sign-up. A render turns all three into 12–20-second 1080×1920 MP4s with AI voice-over, captions, music and an end card, animating your own photos; there are no avatars. Videos cost from $1.66 each in one-time packs, with no subscription (pricing). Our captions sit lower, and the end card's call to action higher, than Meta's Reels safe zone today, so check the Reels preview before you publish. More on turning a product URL into a video.

Questions

Can Shopify's own AI make the product video?

Not when we checked on 25 September 2026: Shopify Magic's help page lists text generation, such as product descriptions and blog posts, and still-image tools, such as background removal, but no video generation (Shopify Help Center).

Can I upload a WebM file and use it for ads too?

Shopify accepts .webm, but Meta's Reels ad specs list MP4 or MOV for Instagram and MP4, MOV or GIF for Facebook (Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels). Export MP4 and use the same file in both places.

Does the same video fit “Ads on Facebook Reels”?

No. That's a separate overlay unit that takes square 1:1 video at 1440×1440, 4–15 seconds long (Meta Ads Guide). A 9:16 video is made for full-screen Reels ads.

Can I run the same video as a TikTok ad?

Usually, yes. TikTok's In-Feed ads recommend 9:16, need at least 540×960 and take .mp4 or .mov files up to 500 MB (TikTok Ads Help, updated June 2026). Our TikTok ad specs guide covers the safe zones and TikTok's AI label.
